Conservation Tree Program
Every winter,
the Conservation District offers low-cost seedling trees and shrubs for
living snow fences, windbreaks, wildlife habitat, visual screens and
noise barriers, erosion control, reforestation, and other conservation
purposes. Deciduous trees, shrubs, and conifer trees are available
through the program and usually arrive in late April--just in time for
spring planting. The SCCD/NRCS can provide assistance when considering
local soil types, tree species, windbreak design, and site preparation
for your planting.
Trees are sold
in lots of 30 and 50 per species. Bareroot trees are sold in lots of
50; bareroot deciduous trees and shrubs have a topheight of 10 to 30
inches and bareroot conifer trees have a topheight of 5 to 12 inches.
Regular and small potted trees are available in lots of 30 per species.
Regular potted trees arrive in Styrofoam crates having 2" x 2" x 7"
openings for the plant roots. Small potted trees are slightly smaller
with their roots contained in small tubes.
The SCCD also
offers Hydrosource root dip to attract and retain soil moisture near the
seedlings roots. Complimentary 1/2 ounce packets are provided with each
order and treat up to 150 trees. Tree protectors (with stakes) are
available to protect seedlings from deer and other animals, severe
weather, and mowers / weed eaters. Weed fabric is available to reduce
grass and weed competition. If you are planning a large planting and
have access to a 40 hp tractor with 3-point hitch, the SCCD will also
rent a tree planter and/or a fabric machine to assist your efforts.
Please call the
SCCD for more information about seedling trees, supplies, and machine
rentals at the phone number listed below. An order form, a tree
planting guide, and descriptions of available species are provided in
the links listed below.
